The former foreign minister said he had promised voters in Sabah and his constituency that he would step down from any party posts and leave the party if Umno and BN failed to keep its promises.
“With Umno and BN no longer in power, our struggle will not bear fruit.
“But I will keep to my word,” he said in a statement.
News of Anifah’s resignation came less than 24 hours after Umno Supreme Council member Mustapa Mohamed quit the party.
FMT earlier reported that Anifah had submitted his letter of resignation to Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa.
It is still unclear whether the Kimanis MP will be joining another party.
With Anifah’s resignation, Umno is left with only six parliamentary seats in Sabah — Kinabatangan, Kudat, Beaufort, Sipitang, Libaran and Beluran. Labuan was also won by Umno.
