PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the new chairman of sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Berhad, a statement from the prime minister’s office said today.

Others named as directors are Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, former Petronas president Mohd Hassan Marican, former Bank Negara deputy governor Sukhdave Singh and former Securities Commission executive director Goh Ching Yin.

The appointment of the board members takes effect immediately, the statement said.

It added that the appointment of the managing director for Khazanah will be announced at a later date.

The announcements came following the recent resignations of Khazanah’s nine directors, including its managing director Azman Mokhtar and executive committee chairman Nor Md Yusof.

They said they had tendered their resignations to allow the new government to decide the leadership of Khazanah.

The other Khazanah directors comprising prominent bankers and corporate figures were Nazir Razak, Nirmala Menon, Mohamed Azman Yahya, Mohammed Azlan Hashim, Yeo Kar Peng, Andrew Sheng Len Tao and Raja Arshad Raja Uda.

The decision comes weeks after Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad criticised Khazanah for deviating from its initial purpose of helping Bumiputeras.

“It is quite obvious now that they are doing all kinds of funny things. They are buying houses and they are taking over companies,” he said early this month.
