PETALING JAYA:
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Hanipa Maidin was back in action following a health scare earlier this month which saw him collapsing at the monthly civil servants’ assembly in Putrajaya.

Hanipa, who is also a lawyer, officiated an event called “Resolving Disputes in India: A Practitioner’s Perspective for Malaysian Investors”.

It was attended by a delegation from India’s High Commission led by Deputy High Commissioner Nikhilesh Chandra Giri and secretary-general of the Mumbai Centre for International Arbitration Neeti Sachdeva.

The event, featuring Naresh Thacker of Mumbai-based Economic Laws Practice, was hosted by law firm Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill (LHAG), which has opened an Indian desk to deal with Malaysian investments in India.

It was also attended by LHAG chairman Nitin Nadkarni and senior lawyer Rosli Dahlan who moderated the panel discussion.

When Rosli thanked Hanipa for officiating the event even though he had to use a walking stick, the 50-year-old quipped that with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as his “boss”, he as a younger minister would be put to shame if he couldn’t host the visiting delegation.

Hanipa, who is Amanah’s MP for Sepang, fainted as Mahathir was delivering a speech at Dataran Perdana on July 9, falling some one and a half metres from the stage.

In 2016, he underwent surgery at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a brain haemorrhage after collapsing in the middle of a Dewan Rakyat debate.

He was out of action for six months, returning to Parliament in October that year.
