GEORGE TOWN:
In yet another crime involving a Grab driver, a teacher who worked part-time for the ride-hailing service suffered a terrifying ordeal last Saturday when he was threatened, forced to withdraw his savings, pawned his mobile phone and photographed in the nude by two men claiming to be policemen.

In the 2.30pm incident, the 34-year-old part-time driver had picked-up a male passenger from Perak Road for a trip to Gurney Plaza.

According to a police report lodged by the driver in Batu Ferringhi, the passenger had asked for two detours and they never made it to the intended destination.

The first stop was to buy nasi kandar supposedly for the passenger’s mother, followed by a trip to his “house” in Seri Tanjung Pinang, which is 2km away from Gurney Plaza.

At Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Tokong, the passenger asked the driver to pull-up to a roadside carwash, where two men claiming to be policemen were waiting.

The men flashed what looked like police identity cards.

“They took out my car keys and pulled me out. They then searched my car, took my wallet and two mobile phones.

“The police officers then accused me of being a member of a prostitution syndicate and pretending to be an immigration officer. They then asked me for RM3,000 to let me go, which I did not have,” the report read.

The men then asked the driver to give them RM500 instead. The driver said he did not have the money and he was forced to ask from his friends.

The driver’s friends then banked in the RM500 as he was forced to lie to them that he was involved in an accident.

The driver was then stripped naked and the men took pictures of him.

They then ordered the driver to withdraw all his money at a bank in Northam Road. He withdrew RM300.

The three men then took the driver to a gambling parlour at Anson Road, where they used the driver’s online banking account to place bets.

At 3pm the same day, the driver was taken to a pawn shop in Jalan Jelutong where he was forced to pawn his iPhone 6S for RM630, which the men took.

“They then let me go and threatened me not to make a police report or they would find me and my family,” he said.

The driver’s police report has gone viral on social media.

A police investigator told FMT that the passenger who booked the Grab ride had told the driver that he wanted to scout for transvestites in Gurney Drive and the driver had obliged.

Meanwhile, Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said a 35-year-old man who booked the ride was arrested last night, while the two other men were still being traced.

He said the suspect claimed to be a consultant and was wanted in Kuala Lumpur for two cases of theft and extortion and had two criminal records for cheating in 2012 and 2016.

Anuar said the suspect also had a drug-related crime record in 2016.

“The suspect admitted being involved in the case and will be remanded soon,” he said.

A Grab spokesperson said it was looking into the case and declined to comment further.

A Grab driver, Aiman Nosri, 27, was found dead at a parking lot in Taman Selayang Makmur in Selangor on the night of June 2.

Two foreigners have been charged with his murder.
