PETALING JAYA:
Authorities in Hong Kong and Macau have refused to comment on reports that businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, has fled to the casino hub.

A spokesman for the Security Bureau in Macau told the South China Morning Post that according to the law, “the authorities do not reveal any information about the entrance or exit across the border of any individual”.

The Hong Kong police and Department of Justice meanwhile said they would not comment on the matter.

According to the report, there is no extradition agreement between Macau and Malaysia, although Hong Kong has an agreement with Malaysia for the surrender of fugitive offenders.

Low is wanted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over allegations that some US$4.5 billion was siphoned from state investment arm 1MDB between 2009 and 2015.

The anti-graft agency last month requested for Low to come forward to assist in investigations into former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was earlier reported as having rejected an offer for Malaysian investigators to grill Low in Dubai.

On June 28, MACC officers raided Low’s apartment in Jalan Kia Peng, Kuala Lumpur. According to a warrant, the raid was based on investigations which concluded that “there are logical reasons to suspect that information on offences under the MACC Act 2009 could be available at the premises”.

Earlier last month, the immigration department cancelled Low’s Malaysian passport at the request of MACC.

According to a US Department of Justice lawsuit on 1MDB, Low also holds another passport from the West Indies island of St Kitts and Nevis.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said yesterday that the latest information obtained by the police in tracking down Low in Hong Kong showed that the businessman had fled to Macau.
