KUALA LUMPUR:
Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said today Jamal Yunos, who was arrested in Indonesia, should not be granted bail if he is charged.

In welcoming the news that Jamal had been deported to Malaysia from Indonesia, Ramkarpal said: “In the very likely event Jamal is charged in court for offences said to have been committed by him in the past, it is hoped that the prosecution strongly objects to bail being granted to him as it is quite obvious from his recent actions that he has displayed a propensity for absconding which must be avoided at all costs.”

The Sungai Besar Umno division chief is being investigated for at least six offences. He went missing from his ward at Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital where he was seeking treatment on May 25. Police launched a manhunt and later said he was in Indonesia.

Jamal was arrested by Indonesian police while having a haircut in Jakarta on July 2.

He arrived at the court complex about 4pm and is expected to be charged with escaping from custody.

Ramkarpal said in fleeing to Indonesia to avoid arrest and lying about it by claiming to be in Malaysia, Jamal had demonstrated “utter disregard for the rule of law and obviously has no qualms resisting arrest by the authorities”.

He said in a statement that the granting of bail was at the discretion of the court and that it could choose to impound Jamal’s passport as a condition if it were to grant him bail. However, Ramkarpal pointed out that “the possibility of him absconding to avoid prosecution cannot be excluded”.

He hoped the court would take this into cognisance and deny Jamal bail.

Jamal was escorted by several policemen after arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport about 3.15pm today.
