KOTA KINABALU:
The new Sabah government has reiterated its commitment to introduce Sabah History as a subject in schools in the state as promised by the Parti Warisan Sabah-Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance during the election campaign.

State Education and Innovation Minister Yusof Yacob said the issue was being looked into.

“We intend to carry it out but we need time to implement this,” he told reporters at an event in Papar, near here, today.

Sabah PH had said Sabah History was needed because the current history syllabus was too Malaya-centric and did not enable Sabahans to adequately learn the history of their state.

The subject, now being researched by Universiti Malaysia Sabah, is expected to be rolled out within three years.

Yusof also said his ministry was studying a mechanism to teach a third language in secondary schools in the state.

Besides Malay and English, languages such as German, Italian and French would be offered to students, he said.

“We want this for our students because most of the good universities are located in Europe, including in Germany and France.

“So, we want to give our students a wider opportunity to pursue tertiary education in these countries as well,” he said.

On whether the state government will consider allowing some schools in the state to become fully English-medium schools, Yusof said it was one of the ambitions of the current government but the matter was not urgent.

“The question of establishing English-medium schools is a sensitive issue to some people. Still, we will look into it,” he said.

During the election campaign last month, the Barisan Nasional promised to establish English-medium schools in Sabah and Sarawak as a pilot project.

On the question of whether the state government will pursue the RM1 billion fund promised by Putrajaya to repair dilapidated schools in the state, Yusof said the issue was being studied.

“I have been briefed about this and was told that there are many schools in dire need of repair and upgrading. I will discuss with the federal government on how we can resolve this problem.

“Actually, it is not just the buildings that are problematic. The teachers in our schools also need better equipment and better facilities.

“But one thing at a time. We will find both short-term and long-term solutions to solve our problems,” he said.
