Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Amar Singh said the “gift givers” would be called in for questioning first.
“Najib and Rosmah will be called in for questioning in due time,” he told reporters at a press conference today.
He said this would be part of their next move after the police concluded their appraisal of items seized from several properties linked to the former prime minister.
“They will be investigated, and we will also call their alleged gift givers for a statement to be recorded.”
Amar said statements on 1MDB had been recorded from 30 individuals to date. He added that no one had claimed the money as of yet, including Umno members.
He was responding to a question on Najib’s claim that the RM114 million found at his family home in Kuala Lumpur was party funds belonging to Umno. Najib had been Umno president until stepping down shortly after the 14th general election last month.
He had also said that the handbags and other luxury items which were seized by the police were gifts and had nothing to do with 1MDB.
He said many of them were wedding presents for his daughter and had been tagged to state who gave them and when.
He added that his son-in-law Daniyar Nazarbayev, the nephew of Kazakstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, had also given many of the handbags to Rosmah.
“People might find it hard to understand, but my son-in-law for example, he gets Birkin from his source, five or six at one go,” he said.
