PETALING JAYA:
Police today disputed a report that they had finished counting the watches seized in the 1MDB probe, saying they were still in the midst of identifying, authenticating and evaluating the valuables.

In a statement, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Department chief Amar Singh said the report by China Press that police had completed counting 433 watches, said to be worth RM80 million, was “premature”.

In its report yesterday, the Chinese daily said the most expensive timepiece, believed to be a Rolex, cost RM3.5 million. Other luxury brands included Patek Philippe and Richard Mille.

China Press also said it had taken experts five days, beginning May 30, to finish counting the six bags’ worth of watches.

Amar advised both the media and members of the public to be patient in the matter.

“An official press conference will be conducted by us to announce the actual value of the watches and jewellery once the authentication and valuation process is completed.”

Last month, the police searched premises linked to former prime minister Najib Razak as part of their probe into corruption and money laundering allegations related to 1MDB.

The searches turned up 72 bags of cash and valuables, and nearly 300 boxes containing luxury handbags.

Police said a total of RM114 million was found in 35 of the 72 bags, while the remaining 37 bags contained jewellery and other valuable items.
