PETALING JAYA:
With 10 days to go before the new menteri besar of Selangor is appointed, rival groups have put forward two names as the leading nominees: Dr Idris Ahmad, 70, or state executive councillor Amiruddin Shari, 38.

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has confirmed that Idris had been nominated, and that other names were also submitted for consideration by the Selangor ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Idris had said yesterday that he had been informed that he was the sole nominee.

However, other PKR bigwigs insist that Amiruddin Shari is most likely to be appointed, and that there had been agreement by several others within PKR.

Amiruddin, assembly member for Sungai Tua, has been in the state Exco for two terms.

“He is an active person and has experience with youth, sports, entrepreneurship development and rural development,” according to a party insider.

Seri Setia assemblyman Shaharuddin Badaruddin is also among those nominated.

While Wan Azizah has confirmed that Idris is a nominee, those in favour of Amiruddin say that Idris does not have as much administrative experience.

The current menteri besar, Azmin Ali, has been sworn in as economic affairs minister in the federal Cabinet, but has been directed by the Sultan to remain until his successor was appointed.

Azmin is both MP for Gombak and state assemblyman for Bukit Antarabangsa.
