Hishammuddin, who has been carrying out the duties of deputy president, said he would instead focus on rebuilding the party as a member in Umno’s birthplace of Johor.
“Results from the 14th general election did not side with Barisan Nasional, and I accept openly that this was the rakyat’s choice.
“Personally, I feel partly accountable and responsible for this loss,” he said in a statement today.
He said he was aware that many members had offered themselves as candidates, adding that he believed they should be given the chance to lead.
“I have discussed with the party leadership, including Zahid Hamidi and Khaled Nordin in his capacity as Johor Umno liaison chief on how I will continue contributing to the party.
“I am grateful that they understand and respect my decision on this matter,” he said.
Hishammuddin added that Umno’s cause was no longer about individuals, but its strength as a united team.
“Take this loss as a symbol of strength to rebuild Umno, an Umno that is closer to the heart of the rakyat,” he said.
