Mahathir: I can’t meddle in Perlis MB crisis

ALOR STAR:
Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he could not meddle in Perlis Umno’s resistance to the appointment of the menteri besar, as the state was not under “his party”.

He said Pakatan Harapan did not win in Perlis and hence he had no business stepping into the Perlis MB issue, where nine Umno assemblymen have disagreed with the appointment of Azlan Man for a second term.

Dr Mahathir said what was happening in Perlis today was a result of Umno’s own internal issues.

“How am I to step into the Perlis issue, my party is not in power in Perlis. If it is my party then I can be involved, but this is a different party.

“Umno, since they lost the elections, they are in a state of disarray (kucar kacir). They could not be sure of their principles in their party. So, that is why Perlis is like that now,” he said.

Last week, the state Barisan Nasional leader, Shahidan Kassim, had invited Mahathir, who is a former Umno president, to help resolve the issue.

The Raja of Perlis has appointed Azlan Man, assemblyman for Bintong, as menteri besar but the other nine Umno assembly members have resisted, and are supporting Tambun Tulang assemblyman Ismail Kasim.

Barisan Nasional (Umno) won 10 of the 15 state seats. Pakatan Harapan (PKR) holds three seats and PAS two.

After Azlan was appointed menteri besar, Shahidan had said Azlan had been expelled from the party, but senior party leaders said expulsions could only be carried out by the national headquarters.
