Heavy rain, strong winds wreak havoc in Penang

The collapsed and shattered glass panels at a KTM station in Bukit Mertajam caused by the storm early this morning.
BUKIT MERTAJAM:
A storm that brought heavy rain and strong winds damaged a railway station and flooded homes in several areas of mainland Penang early today.

Glass panels at a KTM station here were shattered and collapsed after they were hit by gusts of wind.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident as the station was empty of people at the time.

Tents at a Ramadan bazaar in Uptown Perda, Bukit Mertajam, upended by the strong winds.

In the Uptown Perda area, tents set up for a Ramadan bazaar were blown down by the winds and the relentless deluge.

Meanwhile, at least 50 low-lying areas on the mainland were flooded, according to the Fire and Rescue Department.

Some 200 houses were inundated in the downpour which lasted several hours.

Among the affected areas were Kampung Padang Lalang, Kampung Perlis, Kampung Malaysia and Kampung Permatang Rawa.
