Former Penang DAP assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu said while Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s reassurance was laudable, the amendment to the state constitution should be an easy one.
Teh said Chow could start by drafting out a motion on term limits to be debated at the state assembly and follow it up with a vote on the matter.
Pakatan Harapan won 37 out of 40 seats in the assembly.
“All he needs to do is discuss with his state executive councillors and draft out a motion and send it to the speaker of the state assembly.
“It is just a short-worded sentence (inserted into the constitution) implying that the chief ministership shall not be held by a person who had held it for two terms in the assembly,” he told FMT.
Earlier today, Chow affirmed that he will limit the chief ministership to two terms and asked the state legal adviser to look into it. He said it could be tabled at the assembly at the year’s end.
Teh, who is now Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s Jelutong pro-tem member, had previously pursued the CM term-limit issue since 2013.
However, all four of his motions were rejected by the speaker of the assembly, with the last one in November rejected due to a technicality.
He had also wanted the Penang constitution to ensure the CM’s post could also be held by a woman.
‘Why wait? Have 2-term cap for CM, MB in Selangor, Penang now’
