In a statement issued this evening, he said he had sent the resignation letter to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“As I was appointed the chairman of Felda by the previous government, it is only proper that I quit the post in an institution led by the new government,” he said.
Shahrir was appointed the chairman of Felda on Jan 6, 2017, to take over from Isa Abdul Samad whose term had ended then.
Shahrir failed to retain his Johor Bahru parliamentary seat in the general election on May 9. He lost to Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir of PKR.
“I convey my gratitude to the people of Felda for their support and cooperation throughout my service as the Felda chairman in the effort to take Felda to its original status,” he said.
He said he had introduced various improvements in the Felda administration and management system, including enhancing governance and regaining the confidence of the settlers to return to the Felda management system.
“Through the ‘Muafakat Felda’ initiative introduced in August 2017, some 105,294 settlers re-established cooperation with Felda as of May 2018,” he said.
The other achievement was the regaining of ownership of Felda’s land on Jalan Semarak that was mortgaged for the Kuala Lumpur Vertical City (KLVC) project, he added.
“Moving forward, I introduced Felda 2.0 to upgrade various facilities in Felda schemes for the new generation to match the facilities in the cities,” he said.
