Najib, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said the huge crowds which had turned up at the opposition’s political programmes were only concentrated in non-Malay areas.
“If we look at the talks by the opposition, they are mostly in urban areas, and many of those present are non-Malays, mostly DAP supporters. We know they also use buses to bring supporters from outside, they are not only local supporters.
“I always say I do not need to have a large number of attendees (at events), but I want local voters, locals to attend (the BN programmes). So if we get 10,000, for example, who are locals, it’s better than if we get 20,000 but mostly outsiders,” he said on a talk-show broadcast live on TV3 last night.
When asked on the possibility of a Malay tsunami on May 9, similar to the “Chinese tsunami” that had taken place in the 2013 general election, he said what was happening now was a “fitnah” tsunami.
He said Malaysian politics was based on a mature democracy, and that debate should be based on track record, performance, policies, agenda, manifestos and roadmaps.
However, he said, the opposition did not have any weapons with which to face the government other than slander and the politics of hatred.
“We take the example of their manifesto: it has not got any good response, nor any recognition by international bodies, by rating agencies and so on. No one talks about their manifesto.
“But they take BN’s manifesto seriously, meaning we have an agenda, we have plans and we have proven that over the last five years we have been able to fulfil up to 99.4% of our promises. That’s very high. In some instances, we even exceeded our targets,” he said.
Najib also said the election was not only about people fulfilling their obligations as voters, as it was also to determine the country’s destiny.
He said voters should think carefully before choosing between the BN government and the opposition.
“First of all, if they choose the opposition, there is likely to be a serious split. They will not be a stable government because they have been hostile against each other for decades.
“Secondly, they all have different ideologies; thirdly, Tun Dr Mahathir himself said they cannot implement their manifesto; and fourth, speeches given by DAP (leaders) clearly reveal their real intentions, that all this is merely a political ploy.”
He told the people not to be taken in by sentiments of “changing the government” as the changes brought by the opposition would not necessarily benefit the country.
“We cannot assume that change will bring about good things. For instance, the Arab Spring – they claimed they were changing the government considered to be a dictatorship in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, and so on. These countries have been destroyed because the youths believed in bringing about change, but there was no true direction of change.
“So let’s change for the better, and here, I see the BN agenda is better than the opposition’s. That’s why we have implemented the national transformation policy, so we transform the country without changing the leadership,” he said.
