Now the hard part: Educating old DAP fans on logo change

PETALING JAYA:
One of the biggest concerns for DAP candidates in the coming election is whether elderly Chinese who traditionally support the party will be aware that they have to place their marks against the PKR logo on their ballot papers.

Klang MP Charles Santiago, himself a DAP member, told FMT there was still a lot of work to do to get the information out regarding the change of logos.

He said elderly voters might be confused over the absence of DAP’s rocket symbol from the ballots.

“They are familiar only with the rocket,” he said. “So we have to work hard to reach out to them.”

He said Pakatan Harapan (PH) was already giving out the relevant information in Klang and several other constituencies, but added that much remained to be done.

“In the three weeks left before the polls, we will be hitting the ground on this particular issue,” he added.

Asked about his worries regarding Klang, a seat which he won with large majorities in the last two elections, Santiago said his top concern had to do with the consequences of the redrawing of electoral boundaries.

“My biggest worry is about voters not being sure where to vote because of the redelineation,” he said.

He noted that critics of the redelineation had accused the Election Commission of gerrymandering to favour Barisan Nasional (BN).

“It’s quite clear that Umno wants Selangor badly,” he said, adding that BN’s victory in the state would shore up Prime Minister Najib Razak’s reputation in his party.

“In order to get a firmer footing within Umno, he needs to get a two-third majority in Parliament and to get Selangor back. That would make his leadership of the party indisputable.”
