GEORGE TOWN:
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today said he stands by his comments that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) practises double standards.

He was responding to MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad, who had yesterday advised Lim and Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali to be careful and not make defamatory comments against the anti-graft body as action could be taken against them.

“We stand on the basis of truth. It is clear they are trying to politicise matters as the 14th general election is coming.

“Before this, MACC said they wanted to take action against me, but until now I am still waiting,” he told a press conference today.

Lim had on numerous occasions accused the anti-graft body of practising double standards.

The most recent allegation he made was on the issue of Baling MP Abdul Azeez Rahim allegedly receiving RM3 million from Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd (CZC) to halt investigations into the undersea tunnel and three main roads project.

Lim again questioned why Azeez was not arrested, but the businessman, who had allegedly received RM19 million, was arrested by MACC.

The DAP secretary-general also urged MACC to not “forget” that there have been many reports by Barisan Nasional (BN) media that Penang government leaders had received millions in kickbacks, which has proven to be false.

“Why has MACC not taken action against BN media over this false information? There has been no action against those who leaked information as well.

“We will let the people decide whether MACC has acted fairly towards the state government,” he said.

Lim then referred to the seizure of Jho Low’s RM1 billion luxury yacht in Bali, Indonesia, questioning how a young man like Jho Low was able to afford such a vessel.

He also said he was “ready to be probed by MACC” over his remarks on Jho Low and 1MDB.

“Why is the MACC not stepping in to investigate and take action? Is it not a cause for action? A basis for a serious investigation to be carried out?

“This is what you call double standards. Also, it is a black mark on MACC,” he said.

On Wednesday, Indonesian officials seized Low’s luxury yacht Equanimity when it was moored at Benoa Bay in the popular tourist destination.

Reuters quoted Agung Setya, the director of economic and special crimes at Indonesia’s criminal investigation bureau, as saying there had been 34 crew members on board the Equanimity at the time.

“Indonesian authorities had worked with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation on the money laundering case,” Setya was quoted as saying.
