In a statement, they said the former deputy prime minister was taken there at 10am for the treatment by Dr Fazir Mohamad, under the hospital’s Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department.
They did not disclose what the surgery was.
“God willing, the procedure went smoothly and well,” the family said.
Anwar, 69, is currently at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital for rest and follow-up treatment.
“All of us in the family wish to record our appreciation to all parties who helped make the surgery a success, especially the HKL’s orthopaedics and traumatology team, as well health deputy director-general Dr Jeyaindran Sinnadurai,” the family said.
Before this, Anwar had undergone an “arthroscopic” treatment at HKL on Nov 12 last year following an injury on the shoulder which he sustained in an accident at Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur, in 2014.
Although he was given physiotherapy, the pain on the shoulder had remained.
He had also suffered in an accident on Sept 22 last year when an escort vehicle had hit the back of the prison car which was transporting him from HKL to the Sungai Buloh Prison.
According to a statement by the Prisons Department on Jan 7 this year, Anwar could be released as early as June 10, after a one-third remittance of the five-year jail sentence imposed on him by the Federal Court on Feb 10, 2015.
The court had found him guilty of sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. The conviction was criticised by local and international human rights groups as being politically motivated.
