GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng says Prime Minister Najib Razak was wrong when he called the Penang undersea tunnel and roads project a “monstrous scandal”.

Lim said the real “monstrous scandals” in the country were the 1MDB issue and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.

He said the Penang undersea tunnel- roads project was not a monstrous scandal as suggested by Najib, but a scandal concocted by MCA and Gerakan.

On Friday, Najib had said the undersea tunnel was a waste of public funds and a “skandal raksaksa” (monstrous scandal).

“I want to ask Najib, what about the RM55 billion ECRL which was awarded without an open tender? What about 1MDB? That is a ‘maha raksaksa’ (mega monstrous) scandal.

“It is clear they (MCA and Gerakan) are trying to sabotage the project through false claims and lies.

“When they cannot smear me or the government, they drag the prime minister along.

“This is a political witch hunt to smear the good name of the Penang government … especially when the PM has come into the fray to call it a monstrous scandal,” he told reporters at Komtar today.

Lim said Najib could have forgotten that he witnessed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) of the proposed undersea tunnel and roads project in April 2011.

The chief minister said he would write to Najib’s office to meet him and present him with a memento – a framed picture of the signing of the MoU.

Meanwhile, Lim said MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong was determined to sabotage the entire project aimed at alleviating the increasing traffic congestion on the island.

He said despite answering all his allegations point by point, Wee continued to move on “to other lies and falsehoods”.

Lim said Wee must own up to all the allegations he had made, as all his claims had so far been proven wrong.

“Wee is only good at jumping from one point to another, which has been proven wrong at every juncture.

“When I expose his lies, he will be quiet about it and then he will carry on with the next one.

“We all know MCA is trying to sabotage the project … the ultimate loser will be the people of Penang who will be stuck in traffic,” he said.
