GEORGE TOWN: Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu says he will contest in the next general election (GE14) but has still not decided if he will defend his current seat or move to Sungai Pinang.

This was revealed at a press conference today after Teh’s former strategic election director Adam Chew said he had started fund-raising efforts to help Teh in GE14.

“Yes, I will contest, but I am not sure which seat yet. We will see how. I will reveal plans later,” Teh said.

Teh won the Tanjung Bungah state seat as a DAP candidate in the last general election in May 2013. However, last October, he declared that he would be leaving DAP at the end of his term over his differences with the DAP-led state government.

The Penang government subsequently stripped him of his constituency allocations amounting to nearly RM200,000 as well as other powers accorded to state assemblymen from DAP and PKR, to sign off documents pertaining to the payment of aid to constituents.

The latest twist to this conflict between Teh and the state government came about with his five assistants given termination letters last week.

To help Teh prepare for GE14, Chew said he is raising money through a crowdfunding effort on Facebook.

“We started last week and have since collected RM13,000,” Chew said, adding that the effort is being handled like a US-style political action committee (PAC).

The PAC is a type of organisation that pools campaign contributions from members and supporters, whose funds are used to campaign for or against political candidates, but without the involvement of the candidate they support.

“For starters, we need printers, stationery, furniture, sofa and more. This would help us in setting up our new centre.

“We are looking for funds for Teh to run in the next general election, so we would like to invite people to donate to us, cash or in kind,” Chew said.

However, there was no indication by Chew as to which party he would contest under, saying all will be revealed in a “matter of time”.

Teh, who was present, said he has no part in Chew’s initiative and said he would only reveal his plans after Parliament is dissolved for the next polls.
