PKR gives police a week to probe report on ‘phantom voters’

Party treasurer-general Tan Yee Kew says PKR will take the matter up with the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission if the police fail to act.

PETALING JAYA:
PKR today gave the police one week to act on its complaint that over 1,000 individuals provided false information to the Election Commission (EC) and the National Registration Department (NRD) in an attempt to change their voting centre ahead of the 14th general election (GE14).

The party’s treasurer-general, Tan Yee Kew, said if there was no satisfactory response from the police, it would bring the complaint to the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC).

She said PKR had made four police reports from August to November last year concerning 1,429 individuals it suspected of supplying false information to the EC and NRD to register as voters.

However, there was no follow-up action despite many enquiries made to the investigating officer, she said.

To-date, she said the police had only recorded a statement from S Raveentheran, who made a police report for PKR on Nov 9.

Tan said a PKR door-to-door check at a house in the Wangsa Maju parliamentary constituency did not turn up the individual using the address and neither did the residents there recognise the name.

She criticised the statement by Wangsa Maju district police chief Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif who said a report had been submitted to the EC and asked PKR to contact the commission.

“The response is unacceptable because although the EC is empowered to penalise anyone supplying false information, it is the duty of the police to investigate a criminal offence under Section 177 of the Penal Code.

“A person supplying false information in his identity card may have committed several criminal offences. The police cannot disregard our report,” she told a news conference held jointly with PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar at the party headquarters.

Nurul Izzah said the issue was serious and must be dealt with immediately as it was not something new.

She pointed to EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah’s statement that the police were responsible to act in the matter.

“The EC chairman has stated his stand and yet the police have still not taken any action.

“If housewives and the unemployed can be detained for criticising the prime minister, why is it that no action is taken against individuals such as these?” she asked.

Yesterday, Hashim was reported as saying that the EC left it to the police to investigate claims of “phantom voters” in Wangsa Maju.

He said the EC would give its full cooperation to the police investigation, if needed.
