PUTRAJAYA:
Dr Mahathir Mohamad today joined thousands of Muslims for Friday prayers at the Putra Mosque here, ahead of a planned rally to be attended by top leaders from Umno and PAS to protest Washington’s Jerusalem move.

It was earlier reported that Umno president Najib Razak and his counterpart from PAS, Abdul Hadi Awang would share the stage again – their third major appearance together since 2015 – in solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

Najib arrived some 20 minutes after Mahathir, his most vocal rival since their fallout over the 1MDB issue two year ago.

Thousands were already gathered at the mosque clad in white, carrying flags and wearing scarves bearing the Palestinian national colours.

Organisers say they expect some 10,000 people at the rally today.

Several groups of foreigners were also spotted on the mosque grounds including Palestinians.

A Palestinian only known as Baharudin said he was moved by the support shown by Malaysians.

“It is good that they are gathering here today to show their support for the Palestinians. We need to stand with each other in this struggle,” he told FMT.
