GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will pay a one-off RM700 to 48,424 people in the state who suffered losses in last month’s floods, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng revealed today.

In a statement today, he said the total payout of RM33.4 million was the largest for flood victims in the history of any Malaysian state.

Lim said some 42,000 people would have their RM700 credited directly to their bank accounts today.

“Tomorrow, we will be handing out RM700 to 5,925 victims in person who had nominated to receive their aid in cash.

“This is part of the state’s efforts to let the people of Penang bounce back, get back on their feet to help restore their lives to normalcy,” he said.

He said a total of 52,950 flood aid applications were received by the Penang government, with 1,316 applications rejected.

Lim said those rejected were found to be either “false” or applications from two or more people in the same household.

Another 3,210 applications were yet to be approved as they lacked supporting documents.

The aid was open to all those who suffered property or vehicular damage in the Nov 4-5 floods. The registration began on Nov 21 and ended on Dec 2.

Their applications were vetted by their respective state assembly members and their offices, district offices, and village security and development committees before approval.
