She said she hoped to meet with Najib and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi during her stay in Malaysia in the next few days.
“Najib can call for Anwar’s immediate release and there are certain avenues that he can take to allow for Anwar’s release.
“That is something he can do. He can also allow for him to continue his medical treatment while he is at home,” she said during a press conference at PKR’s headquarters here today.
“I want to talk to Najib about Anwar’s unjust imprisonment and that he continues to be a prisoner of conscience.
“Prime minister Najib was so concerned that he went to visit Anwar in hospital, so from my perspective, it would seem that he was so vested and wanted to know what Anwar’s medical treatment was, (and) he should be interested to know what his medical treatment is now.
“I would love to sit down with him and tell him about Anwar’s medical condition and request for his immediate release.
Motley said she also hoped to meet with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad too.
“In regards to Mahathir, I understand he is very much on the same page as I am in calling for Anwar’s immediate release and so I would like to discuss that with him and update him on what the family has communicated to me about Anwar’s medical progress or lack thereof.”
She criticised Anwar’s imprisonment, calling it a “stain on Malaysia’s human rights record”.
“Every day he is in prison is a stain against Malaysia’s record on human rights.
“We are asking very reasonably that he be released immediately.
“From a legal standpoint, I do believe that a lot of things have happened to this trial that goes against international human rights standards as well as legal standards in Malaysia.
“This includes his right to present evidence; certain evidence was dismissed by the court so these things are issues.
“Since Anwar has been in prison for charges that are questionable at best, his imprisonment is a violation of Malaysia’s laws and the International human rights convention, of which Malaysia is a signatory.”
The US-based Motley has been representing Anwar since Sept 7 to on a pro bono basis.
Anwar has been suffering from continuous pain in his right shoulder, which worsened after an accident on Sept 22 as he was being transferred from Hospital Kuala Lumpur to the Sungai Buloh prison.
A prison escort vehicle rammed the vehicle he was in from behind.
Anwar, 70, was sentenced to five years’ jail for sodomising Mohd Saiful Bukhari, 30, at Desa Damansara condominium in Bukit Damansara on June 26, 2008.
He is currently serving the sentence at the Sungai Buloh prison.
