KUCHING: Even after his death 10 months ago, the late Adenan Satem, fondly known as “Tok Nan” to Sarawakians, is still remembered for his many people-centric policies during his tenure as chief minister of Sarawak.

Most of the state assemblymen, from both Barisan Nasional (BN) and the opposition, who are currently attending the state legislative assembly sitting, had only good things to say about Adenan’s leadership.

David Wong (DAP-Pelawan) said among Adenan’s most notable contributions was the revision of the electricity tariff structure for the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors to cushion the rising cost of living.

He also commended the former chief minister for abolishing payment on certain land quit rents which had a huge impact on the people.

“During his stint as chief minister, he implemented people-friendly policies. He won the hearts (of Sarawakians), especially those in urban areas, through moves like the abolition of toll for bridges, acceleration of development in suburban areas and reduction of premium payments for agricultural and residential land, among others.

“This is the kind of leadership that Sarawakians put their faith in and are willing to work together with,” Wong said when debating the state Budget 2018 during the state legislative assembly sitting here today.

Comparing Adenan’s leadership style to that of current Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg, Wong said: “But with the new chief minister, we do not see these policies anymore.

“Abang Johari likes to impress the people by showing how tech-savvy he is, talking about digital economy and e-commerce, high speed internet, LRT project and Sarawak Pay, but he forgets that Sarawak needs a caring government that takes care of the people, especially the poor and the less privileged, first before embarking on other agendas.”
