KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat has approved a motion to debate the massive floods that hit Penang over the weekend.

Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia allowed the motion which was raised by Ng Wei Aik (DAP-Tanjung) under Standing Order 18 (1).

Pandikar allowed the motion based on the fact that it is a specific matter of public importance and it required an urgent debate.

However, the debate will be held in the special chambers at 2.30pm and not in the main Dewan Rakyat.

Ng while reading his motion, said the motion was raised as Penang had been hit by massive floods. He also thanked the federal and state authorities, including the armed forces for their quick measures to handle the situation.

Penang was hit by one of the worst floods last Saturday, causing extensive damage and loss of lives. Latest figures report at least seven people have been confirmed dead due to the devastating floods.

Prime Minister Najib Razak has said the federal government would assist any state affected by disasters such as floods based on humanitarian grounds.

He added the federal government would immediately channel aid to the state governments, including those administered by the opposition parties, without the need for the state government requesting for it.

The floods that hit Penang following continuous heavy rain last night saw more than 2,000 victims being evacuated.

It prompted Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to contact Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at 3.30am on Saturday to request for assistance from the armed forces and the National Security Council (MKN) to help flood victims in Penang.
