GEORGE TOWN: An Umno assemblyman has proposed a RM2,000 one-off payment to all households affected by Penang’s weekend flash floods, which displaced more than 3,000 people and killed seven.

Muhammad Farid Saad (BN-Pulau Betong) said the amount would help households which had sustained damage to their properties and belongings.

He said it would also help them get food and other sustenance for their families.

“Being aware of the recent thunderstorms and rains, which are the worst in the state’s history, I would like to propose that this august House give a special handout of RM2,000 to each household.

“Schools, mosques, suraus and non-Muslim places of worship should also be given fair compensation.

“The amount should be given without asking them to be Pakatan Harapan members.

“The money for this purpose should come from the state’s consolidated funds,” he said when tabling his motion at the state assembly today.

Farid also asked that all state district health officers conduct door-to-door visits to flood victims to ensure that they are not affected by waterborne diseases.

“Floodwaters might be contaminated by water from the sewer. It is therefore important for the health department to quickly attend to the flood victims,” he said.

Farid told Speaker Law Choo Kiang that he would forgo a debate on his motion, adding that he wanted it to be taken into consideration.

Law said the motion could not be officially recognised if there was no debate, but that Farid’s motion had likely been heard by the state executive councillors present, which would suffice.

Earlier, state executive councillor Chow Kon Yeow tabled an emergency motion on the flash floods which occurred over the weekend.

The motion covered a variety of concerns, including the improvement of disaster relief procedures and enhancement of flood or bad weather alerts.

The motion was debated for three hours and was unanimously supported by members of the House in a voice vote.
