Putrajaya: No need for MACC to probe 1MDB too

KUALA LUMPUR:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) did not probe the 1MDB case as other authorities had already taken action.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Paul Low Seng Kuan, in a written reply to Tony Pua (DAP-Petaling Jaya Utara), said the other authorities probing the case were Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the police and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Pua had asked why MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad had announced in June that the anti-graft body would not be probing the case of alleged misappropriation and power abuse in the 1MDB controversy.

While the MACC had not probed 1MDB, it had investigated SRC International, as well as the RM2.6 billion donation received by Prime Minister Najib Razak.

The central bank had reportedly imposed a total of RM115.8 million in compound fines and administrative penalties on 1MDB and its entities in the past two years.

Police, on the other hand, had probed 1MDB under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust and Section 420 of the same code for cheating.

The PAC had tabled a 106-page parliamentary report on 1MDB in the Dewan Rakyat in April last year. It highlighted how 1MDB’s board of directors had failed to ensure that the fund’s management complied with good accounting practices.

Earlier today, the Dewan Rakyat was told that police had resubmitted 1MDB investigation papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in a written reply to a question by Pua, said police were now awaiting further instructions from the AG.

“Police investigation papers on 1MDB have been submitted to the AG several times, and they were returned with instructions for further action.

“Police have carried out the necessary actions as ordered by the AG, and the papers have been referred to the AG.”

Pua had asked about the status of police investigations into Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Hilmi, the former CEO of 1MDB, and other related management officials over the 1MDB matter — action recommended by the PAC.
