The former federal minister was arrested last Thursday and has been held in remand since, with the MACC getting a four-day extension on his remand on Monday.
He is being held to assist the MACC in its investigation into the alleged misappropriation of RM1.5 billion from rural development projects in Sabah.
Warisan’s vice-president Junz Wong said the party aimed to raise at least RM300,000 by Friday to meet the bail amount which they anticipate to be higher than that imposed on Shafie’s younger brother, Umno’s Lahad Datu assemblyman Yusof Apdal, who was released from remand in the same case recently.
“The party’s youth and young women’s wings are spearheading the campaign called ‘RM10 each, Solidarity with DSSA (Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal)’,” Wong said in a press conference here yesterday.
“Donations can be deposited into a bank account for a trust fund created specifically by Shafie’s lawyer, Hamid Ismail, for this purpose.”
On Friday, Shafie, a former federal rural and regional development minister, challenged the legality of his remand, but his motion was dismissed by the High Court here on Monday.
His lawyers said they will appeal the decision within a week at the Court of Appeal.
His remand was subsequently extended and will expire this Friday but his lead counsel Martin Tommy said they will seek an early release to allow the Semporna MP to attend the annual budget debate at the Dewan Rakyat, also on Friday.
It was earlier reported that the MACC was scrutinising a total of 72 projects out of an original list of 350 under the ministry for suspected embezzlement of funds.
The projects were planned to be carried out between 2009 and 2015 in Kota Kinabalu, Kudat, Kota Belud, Ranau, Beaufort, Keningau, Lahad Datu, Tawau and Sandakan.
The RM1.5 billion was said to be part of RM7.5 billion allocated for water, electricity and road infrastructure development projects.
Some RM170 million in bank accounts and assets of the companies involved in the projects have reportedly been frozen.
While opposition leaders have claimed the investigation was politically motivated to smear the image of Warisan ahead of the next general election (GE14), Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the MACC denied this, insisting that the anti-graft agency operated independently.
