Zamihan Mat Zin’s lawyer Fakhrul Azman Abu Hassan told reporters police had requested for an extension yesterday but that the court had rejected their application to extend Zamihan’s two-day remand order.
“He was released today after we argued that he was being investigated for sedition, which is a bailable offence,” he said at the Dang Wangi police station here.
Zamihan was released at 2.30pm and driven off in a black Toyota Vellfire.
Fakhrul also said Zamihan had cooperated with the authorities and was now awaiting further instructions from the police.
“The ustaz is OK. He is well. The police treated him well.”
Zamihan had earlier courted controversy when he allegedly criticised Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar for rebuking the operator of a Muslims-only laundrette in Muar.
He also made derogatory remarks about the hygiene of Chinese Malaysians.
The comments were made at a religious talk at Masjid Tengku Ampuan Jemaah in Shah Alam on Oct 8. A video of the talk was uploaded on YouTube.
Addressing the congregation there, Zamihan said Sultan Ibrahim’s order for the laundrette to cease its Muslims-only policy was not acceptable.
He also claimed that non-Muslims and the Chinese in particular, were unclean as they wiped themselves with toilet paper after using the toilet.
Jakim has since referred Zamihan to the disciplinary board while the Selangor Islamic Religious Department has banned him from giving lectures at mosques and suraus in Selangor.
After the controversy over his remarks, Zamihan denied he had been rude to the Johor Sultan, but issued an apology to the ruler.
He also lashed out at the media and threatened legal action, claiming he had been slandered.
