EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah said if the proposal was accepted, then the right should be extended to voters from other states as well.
“What about voters from Kelantan, like me? And those from Kedah or Terengganu?
“I met a group from Borneo in Johor, and we encouraged them to register as voters at the place they now lived. But they declined as they wanted to return to their kampung to vote,” he told a news conference after launching the EC’s mobile voter verification app MySPR Semak here today.
The proposal for Sabah and Sarawak voters was made by Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah who urged the EC and the government to amend the law.
On a proposal to introduce e-voting, Hashim said the method needed further study and suggested that the government and opposition representatives seek an agreement to implement it.
“Either the government or the opposition could bring an amendment to the law to Parliament with the support of the other side. If this is not possible, there is no point raising this matter,” he said.
