According to the facts of the case, Dr Khaw Kim Sun was arrested after HK police found evidence which led them to believe he was responsible for the death of his wife, Wong Siew Fing, and their second daughter Lily Khaw Lai Ling, 16, two years ago.

On May 22, 2015, Wong and Lily were found unconscious in their locked Mini Cooper which was pulled over on Sai Sha Road. They died later in hospital.

Based on the post-mortem report, they were found to have died due to carbon monoxide inhalation.

Khaw, 52, who is an associate professor at CUHK’s department of anaesthesia and intensive care and also works as a senior medical officer at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, was remanded after appearing at Sha Tin Magistrates’ Court for the alleged double murder.

According to the HK daily, Khaw’s lawyer said none of his family members attended the court hearing on Monday.

No plea was taken and the case was then adjourned until Oct 16 at Eastern Magistrates’ Courts. As no bail was requested by the defence, Khaw will remain in police custody.

Khaw has three other children, two daughters and a son. At the time of his wife’s death, their eldest daughter, 22, was studying medicine in Malaysia, while their third daughter, 15, and son, 14, were both studying in Hong Kong schools.

Prior to his arrest, Khaw was staying with his third daughter and a domestic helper.

In a statement, CUHK confirmed Khaw was currently employed by its School of Medicine.

“Since the case has already entered criminal proceedings, the institute will deal with his teaching position according to the standard protocol,” a spokeswoman told The Standard.
