Amanah’s open call for Azmin to reconsider PAS exco posts upsets Zuraida

Selangor PH secretary Zuraida Kamaruddin says this is not in line with the coalition's spirit of consensus.

KUALA LUMPUR: Amanah’s call for Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamad Azmin Ali to reconsider PAS’ position in the Selangor administration has been criticised.

Selangor Pakatan Harapan secretary Zuraida Kamaruddin said the open call was not in line with the spirit of consensus in the opposition pact, and it was not mature.

Zuraida said while she respected the right of the Amanah delegates to voice their views at the Selangor Amanah convention yesterday, she was taken aback by the open urging to review the PAS representation in the current administration.

“The current PAS composition in the state administration is in line with the mandate given by the people of Selangor in 2013,” she said in a statement referring to the nod given to PKR, DAP and PAS under the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat opposition pact.

“Furthermore, all PAS representatives have shown their commitment to the policies of the state government, as well as the reformasi agenda.”

Zuraida, who is also Ampang MP, was commenting on Selangor Amanah’s move to approve a motion yesterday calling on Azmin to review the Islamist party’s representation in the state government.

She said the coalition had just set up its state secretariat last Friday, which was also attended by Selangor Amanah’s representative.

“It was agreed then that the composition in the state government would remain unchanged. This is because elections are drawing near and the state government will continue to focus on giving the best service to the people of Selangor, in line with the mandate given.

“It is now best to focus all of our energies on strengthening PH in gearing towards GE14,” Zuraida said.

Ampang Amanah division chief Mohd Anuar Mohd Yusof, who tabled the motion, said this was in line with Pakatan Harapan’s presidential council’s decision to not work together with the Islamist party in the next general election (GE14).

“This is to ensure that PAS’ continued presence in the Selangor administration does not become a thorn in the flesh, which can then jeopardise efforts to defend the PH-led Selangor government in the next polls,” he said at the convention yesterday.

The motion was subsequently debated by the delegates and passed.

PAS left the country’s main opposition partnership after Pakatan Rakyat crumbled in June 2015 following differences with DAP on the implementation of hudud.

The coalition has since been replaced by Pakatan Harapan which now comprises DAP, PKR, Amanah and PPBM.

PAS, however, retained its political relationship with PKR in Selangor, where its leaders are part of the state government.

This was despite the PAS Syura Council agreeing last May to end all political cooperation with PKR after  a motion to end ties with PKR was put forward by 21 PAS divisions, and received support from the Youth and Ulama assemblies in April.
