PETALING JAYA: PKR’s political bureau said it is committed to strengthening Pakatan Harapan (PH).

The statement issued after a three-and-half-hour closed-door meeting at PKR headquarters today, did not give details on what was presently lacking in the coalition.

It also did not reveal the measures to strengthen PH.

The statement also stated it was strategising to defeat Umno-BN, without giving details.

The meeting today was chaired by PKR’s president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Selangor Menteri Besar and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali was absent from the meeting.

The brief statement was read out by PKR’s communications director Fahmi Fadzil.

When asked if the political bureau would cut ties with PAS in Selangor, he replied: “We will see. We want to strengthen PH.”

Last night, the PH presidential council made a firm decision not to cooperate with PAS in the next general election (GE14).

In a statement issued after a three-hour meeting, PH leaders said the opposition coalition will prepare a strategy to manage the expected three-cornered contests in GE14.

“We also managed to solve the problem on the appointment of state leaders,” PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said when approached by the media after the meeting ended at 12.30am.

Almost all the leaders in the PH hierarchy attended the meeting. However, Azmin was notably absent.

On Saturday, Azmin said his talks with PAS leaders were not done in his personal capacity but based on a party decision.

However, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution denied there was such a decision made at the party level.

Azmin said negotiations were “solely to prevent three-cornered contests” in Selangor and to “increase the chances of winnability for PKR and opposition parties”.

The move did not sit well with some party leaders, including Selayang MP William Leong, who recently announced his resignation from the political bureau, the highest decision-making body in PKR.

Today, Rafizi Ramli exposed a split in the top leadership of PKR, saying members of its powerful political bureau are often at loggerheads and decisions made are also not respected.

According to the maverick PKR vice-president, the bureau sank into disarray after de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim was jailed in February 2015.

Close ranks

Meanwhile, PKR’s vice-president Tian Chua, when contacted, told FMT the meeting of the political bureau was to look at ways to close ranks with other PH parties.

“We are working side by side with other parties to make sure PH will win the elections.

“At the moment, we are focusing on seats that PH can win, like those in the east coast,” he said.

However, he said they did not want to announce the seats as to keep PAS in suspense over the matter.
