Khalid said such a victory, with Malaysia taking the football gold, would be a satisfying end to his career.
The SEA Games would be his last major event to oversee as IGP prior to his mandatory retirement on Sept 5, one week from today, as he turns 60.
Malaysia takes on defending champions Thailand in the SEA Games football final tonight at the Shah Alam Stadium, in Selangor. Malaysia last won the gold medal in the 2011 Jakarta Games.
“I’m a big fan of football and watching Malaysia win in three matches in its group was truly spectacular.
“But the semi-final match against Indonesia was really something from the old days, a really exciting match against worthy opponents.
“Now I really feel we are going to come out on top,” he said.
Khalid, who was at the stadium during Malaysia’s semi-final match against Indonesia on Saturday night, said he had watched the game closely.
He had joined tens of thousands of other Malaysians who cheered after striker N Thanabalan scored the solitary goal against the Indonesians.
“It was a really beautiful moment. What a goal by Thanabalan. And what’s more, it has been great to see the nation unite, with fans from all over Asean, as it is proof that sports unifies everyone.”
He also said he kept tabs on the other events as well, such as sepak takraw, and was confident Malaysia would exceed the target of 111 gold medals.
“The 111 is a benchmark, not a limit. With the way our athletes have put up such a fight, I am sure we can do even better.
“It has been an honour for me to oversee the security at all the venues and I really hope that we will continue to push ahead in not just sports but other fields as well,” he said.
Khalid said he was satisfied with crowd control at the matches and commended his men on the ground and volunteer groups for managing the thousands of fans at the Shah Alam stadium.
“There were some incidents which we will look into, involving fans. Severe action will be taken against anyone found to be instigating violence and assaulting fans.
“These things are unfortunate but predictable when thousands of passionate fans are in one place but we will not let them off the hook,” he said referring to one Indonesian fan who was allegedly beaten up by Malaysian fans.
Reports of fireworks being tossed at Indonesian fans by Malaysian fans were lodged and this was confirmed by Shah Alam police chief ACP Shafien Mamat.
