PETALING JAYA: A Tamil school in Negeri Sembilan has denied a post on social media claiming it was told to cover up a statue of Indian philosopher Thiruvalluvar, in time for a ceremony to be attended by Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan today.

SJK (T) Ladang Shanghai in Seremban told FMT there was no such instruction, adding that the statue was covered to protect its new coat of paint.

“We covered the statue because we had just repainted it. We wanted to protect it because we were constructing the stage for today’s event,” said a school spokesman who declined to be named.

He also showed pictures showing a repainted statue of Thiruvalluvar, author of the classic Tamil work, Thirukkural.

“We have uncovered the statue. We hope people will not spread false news on the matter.”

A Negeri Sembilan PKR Youth leader had earlier alleged that the school was instructed to remove the statue.

A picture uploaded on social media also showed “before” and “after” images, the latter showing the statue removed from its place within the school compound.
