More to come, Anwar expects spike in violence in GE run-up

He recalls acts of vandalism targeting the opposition campaign during the last polls.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim today predicted a spike in the type of violence that took place yesterday at a PPBM forum, saying the government was duty-bound to ensure people are free to air their views.

“Such incidents will escalate in the run-up to the 14th general election,” the jailed leader said in a statement, a day after projectiles were thrown at PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad during a forum in Shah Alam.

Police yesterday arrested three youths aged between 17 and 19, after they were detained by PPBM members at the Nothing to Hide forum yesterday.

The forum ended abruptly after missiles, including one laced with chemicals, were hurled at Mahathir who had just finished answering a question from the floor.

Violence erupted as supporters rushed to the stage to protect the 92-year-old former prime minister.

PPBM Youth head Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman did not rule out the possibility that the ruckus was the work of infiltrators who came to the event wearing “fake” PPBM T-shirts. Other opposition leaders have also accused Umno of disrupting the event.

Anwar said the police had failed to act against similar acts of violence on the opposition during the last polls, including vandalism targeting a tour bus he used during campaigning.

“We urge the government to take stern action against the culprits,” he said.
