PETALING JAYA:
Police in the UK have issued a notice to Raja Petra Kamarudin that an allegation of harassment has been made against him by Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle Brown.

A report in Malaysia Today said the notice was served on him yesterday, and that he was told that he would be arrested and charged in court if he wrote any further articles about her or mentioned her name in any article.

“RPK was warned that he ignores this notice at his own peril and if he continues writing about Clare or mentions her name again then the police will take action against him, which will mean he would be charged in court and will have to face whatever consequences of his action,” the report said.

“So, from today, RPK must never again write about Clare or mention her name even if she still harasses other people, such as the prime minister of Malaysia, and calls him and his wife thieves,” it added.

It said the police told Raja Petra that Clare was suffering from stress because of what he wrote about her, giving the impression that she was being subjected to some form of mental torture.

It added that Raja Petra, who is now based in Manchester where the notice was reportedly served yesterday, told the police that he was not going to stop writing about her or stop mentioning her name.

“The police told RPK he will then have to face arrest and RPK replied that he has been arrested many times before this for writing and one more arrest is really not a big deal,” the report said.

According to the notice, a copy of which was uploaded online with the report, the articles had varied in context from showing Clare’s home to calling her a “perfect example of white supremacy at its worst.”

“The sheer volume of articles regarding Mrs Brown have been deemed to be harassing due to the abusive communication,” it said.

The notice added that harassment is a criminal offence under the UK’s Protection of Harassment Act 1997.

It said harassment can take many forms and cited examples such as wilful damage to property, assault, unwarranted verbal or physical threats, abusive communication and repeated attempts to talk to or approach a person who is opposed to it.

“It is important that you understand that should you commit any act or acts either directly or indirectly that amount to harassment, you may be liable to arrest and prosecution,” it said.
