“I’m convinced that these people who are inviting foreigners to intervene in our country’s affairs just to win the election have morals that are devoid of piousness and wisdom, and their victory would also be without piousness and wisdom,” he said in an open letter addressed to Malaysian political parties today.
The PAS president reminded all parties not to repeat the mistakes of the past by involving outsiders in the country’s domestic issues, citing previous cases such as Bumiputera Malaysia Finance (BMF) and Perwaja Steel.
He said there were foreign powers that were only too happy to be given the space to settle Malaysia’s issues in their own courts of law.
“Let our own courts decide on our internal issues, no matter what the judgments are,” he said.
“However bad our internal situation may be, let us bear it ourselves and patiently bring about awareness and repentance,” he added.
He claimed that there were foreign powers wanting to seize the opportunity to prop up their own interests by compromising our country.
“We have had enough of being colonised for several centuries from whose effects we are still recovering,” he said.
Hadi’s statement is believed to be in response to the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) latest civil suit on June 15 to seize assets amounting to US$540 million (RM2.3 billion), including art works, a yacht, jewellery and film rights purchased with funds allegedly embezzled from 1MDB.
The DoJ’s first suit was filed in July last year when Washington sought to confiscate more than US$1 billion (RM4.28 billion) in connection with Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund.
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had yesterday dismissed any notion that the Malaysian opposition was behind the DoJ’s legal actions, calling such claims “extraordinarily stupid”.
The PPBM chairman said the crimes alleged by the DoJ took place in the US where the authorities were not easily swayed by external influences. He also said they involved American banks and properties with the accusations based on the US’ Kleptocracy Asset Recovery law.
He added that the US embassy in Malaysia had also denied that the DoJ move was to help bring down the federal government.
“The US is not like Malaysia. In the US the president is also at the receiving end of reports about himself from relevant officials on whatever misdemeanour he may have done,” Mahathir said.
Hadi, who is Marang MP, today said the Quran forbade Muslims from entrusting outsiders to resolve their problems.
“Any problems within the religious community and the nation are to be resolved by ourselves,” he said, adding that the adverse consequences of foreign intervention would be severe in the long term.
As an example, he said certain factions in 16th century Melaka had requested European colonialists bring down the Malay-Muslim government there possibly because of the wrongdoing or cruelty that was taking place.
“However, the outcome was that the whole Nusantara region became colonised with the occupiers dividing the land after Islam’s sovereignty disappeared,” he said.
“Muslims should understand the latest scenario in international relations to evaluate for themselves the stance that they should adopt towards any country that likes to interfere in the affairs of others and towards the country that is most prominently spreading Islamophobia,” he added.
