During an operation by the Welfare Department on May 24, officers came across a common beggar with RM8,000 cash on her.
According to the China Press, the officers later learnt the woman had RM40,000 in a fixed deposit account in her name as well as a house in George Town.
“The officers said the beggar had no family members nor relatives, so she resorted to begging on the street,” the Chinese daily quoted State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment chairman Phee Boon Poh as saying.
Phee explained that it was common for some beggars to make RM400 a day and get free meals as well.
“Besides, they also have free access to bathing, battery-charging and a resting place,” he said.
