GEORGE TOWN:
A BN assemblyman was told to quit his “coffee shop talk” over claims that the Penang government made money from homes built by the federal government.

Dr Afif Bahardin (PKR-Seberang Jaya) told Omar Abd Hamid (BN-Permatang Berangan) to stop misleading the house after he claimed that a federal housing project in Teluk Bahang had been “surrendered” to the state government.

Omar, who was debating the motion of thanks to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Abdul Rahman Abbas’s opening address, asked where proceeds from the sale of the units there had gone after the alleged surrender.

Afif, who is a state executive councillor, said: “Don’t lie. Please show proof. Do you have this in writing? Or this is coffee shop talk?

“Look, I am on the committee that decides on this matter, so you better have concrete proof.”

Omar said he had evidence and would furnish it in the assembly soon.

He later told reporters outside the house that he was referring to a mixed-development project in Teluk Bahang.

He said 60% of the RM42,000 affordable housing units there were given to the Penang government although it was not spelt out in the planning permission.

He said it would only be fair for the proceeds from the sale of the units to go to the federal government, which he said had paid for their development.

Meanwhile, A Thanasekaran (DAP-Bagan Dalam) appeared to annoy BN backbenchers when he spoke about “MO1”.

In his debate speech, he said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) could be more independent and impartial if it reported directly to Parliament.

Shariful Azhar Othman (BN-Bertam) then stood up and asked if he felt MACC was not impartial.

Thanasekaran told Shariful if “MO1” (or “Malaysian Official 1”, as described in US court papers to recover assets allegedly siphoned off from 1MDB) had yet to be charged in court, then MACC’s impartiality could be brought into question.

Shariful asked deputy speaker Makhtar Shapee to ensure that Thanasekaran’s comment questioning the impartiality of MACC  be noted in the Hansard.

Makhtar then told Shariful to sit down and asked Thanasekaran to continue with his debate.
