In his wrap up speech at the PAS muktamar today, Takiyuddin said as of today, PAS had 897,800 members, falling short of its goal to have 1,000,000 members before this year’s assembly.
“We had given instructions to all states to increase their membership numbers by 15%.”
He noted that Kedah had the most PAS members with 174,429 people, followed by Kelantan (128,856 members), Selangor (107,470 members), Perak (105,092 members) and Terengganu (102,292 members).
Takiyuddin also highlighted the success of its new procedure of approving memberships online received from various PAS divisions in all states.
“In the first four months of this year, we approved 19,877 new members a month, an average of almost 5,000 new members a month.”
At last year’s muktamar, Takiyuddin said PAS only had 800,000 members, when in March 2015 it had one million members.
At the time, he attributed the decrease to the updating of membership records and the exit and death of some party members. He was likely referring to the exit of members to splinter party, Amanah.
Umno is still the single largest political party in Malaysia, with some 3.57 million members as of November 2016.
This year’s muktamar is the second party assembly since the 2015 party elections which saw the defeat of several veteran leaders who were contesting for top posts.
These leaders later set up Amanah, who are now part of Pakatan Harapan together with PKR, DAP and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.
