Anwar: Stop useless investments and robbing Felda settlers

The profits Felda made should be enjoyed by the settlers, not politicians, says former opposition leader in message read out by PKR president Dr Wan Azizah.

SHAH ALAM:
The problems faced by Felda cannot be resolved just by changing its management, says Anwar Ibrahim.

In a message he wrote, that was read out by his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail at the Pakatan Harapan’s Felda Convention today, Anwar said real change can only come about if Felda implements policies that tackle issues of poverty and uphold the rights of its settlers.

“As long as these goals are not achieved, mega projects such as stadiums and luxury warehouses which suck settlers dry must be stopped,” he said.

In his message, Anwar also questioned Felda’s actual profits which he said was not honestly told to the settlers.

But although the settlers were aware of this, Felda’s threats of them losing the institution had scared them into submission, he added.

“The first generation settlers had worked hard and made Felda a giant in the corporate world.

“So it is the right of the settlers and their families to be treated in a way that compensates their sacrifices.

“Stop the useless investments, and stop robbing the settlers. The profits Felda made should be enjoyed by the settlers, not the management or politicians chosen by the government.”

The convention held at Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Abdul Aziz here was strongly objected to by Felda chairman Shahrir Abdul Samad.

He said it was motivated by a political agenda and was meant to incite the public, especially Felda settlers, against the ruling government.

Despite this, more than 200 Felda settlers made their way to the convention where top opposition leaders spoke or made an appearance.
