‘Sabah in sore need of education reforms’

A youth activist says his free tuition programme gave him a wake-up call to push for a better system.

PETALING JAYA: Youth activist Jufazli Shi Ahmad, a likely candidate in the Sabah state election, has declared that he will push for education reforms in the state.

Speaking to FMT, he said he had been conducting a free tuition programme and was dismayed to find out how weak the existing education system was.

Jufazli heads a movement called Gerakan Anak Muda Selamatkan Sabah. He recently announced that he would contest for the Sibuga state seat, currently held by Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman.

Speaking of his tuition programme, he said he was shocked at his students’ poor command of English and weakness in reading and critical thinking. The awareness of the students on “serious issues like corruption” was low, he added.

“With the government’s failure to develop an education system which produces students capable of critical thinking, it’s not surprising that corruption exists at all layers of society in Sabah,” he said.

Jufazli’s tuition programme, for students aged four to 22, is called Sekolah Rakyat Sabah. It caters to 80 students although, according to him, 300 students initially signed up for it.

“We only have four volunteer teachers. Even though we want to accommodate as many as we can, we must ensure that all students can have the attention they need. So we now give priority to the poorest students and stateless children.”

The programme teaches core school subjects such as English, reading, writing and counting. There are also lessons on Sabah and Sarawak history, religious classes and, for older students, political science.

Jufazl is a popular figure on social media. He has nearly 65,000 followers.

He said he hoped to expand Sekolah Rakyat Sabah.

“In 10 years, I hope to create a free education system which can produce quality students who can excel academically and are capable of critical thinking. This way, Sabah can create more leaders to secure its future.”
