She noted that the second meeting of the two since Anwar was jailed was, like the first, initiated by Mahathir.
Mahathir, who now leads Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), met Anwar at the Jalan Duta High Court on Friday. The previous time they met was last September, also during a court hearing involving Anwar.
Mahathir told reporters that the meeting was part of efforts to solidify the opposition.
Wan Azizah said the former PM would have seen no need to meet Anwar if he could, on his own, unite the opposition.
She urged opposition leaders to recognise Anwar’s record of bringing disparate opposition parties together under one banner and to give him another opportunity to do so.
Her remarks followed a statement by Zaid Ibrahim about Mahathir being the de facto opposition leader.
Zaid made his comment in a press interview just days after he announced that he had joined DAP. He has since clarified that it was his personal view, not his party’s.
The clarification came after several opposition figures, including DAP’s legal bureau chief, Gobind Singh Deo, insisted that Anwar was still the de facto leader of the opposition.
