KOTA KINABALU:
Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied claims by Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali that Foreign Minister Anifah Aman will resign from the Cabinet.

“I would like to confirm that there has been no resignation tendered by any senior minister. I know the Selangor Menteri Besar is referring to news spread through social networking sites claiming Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, the Foreign Minister, has or will resign.”

Meanwhile senior Umno minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today said about the rumours of a cabinet minister resigning: “I have not heard the rumours. For sure it’s not me.”

Azmin in his Twitter post yesterday said that a senior minister was going to resign over 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

He insisted that the senior Cabinet minister will resign soon, adding that the information came from the minister himself.

“The information (came) directly from the said person. Just wait, we will make the announcement,” Azmin told reporters at a dinner function in Klang last night.

Zahid said: “Last night, witnesses have seen that I was with Datuk Seri Anifah Aman. And today, he has gone to Brussels representing Malaysia as the Foreign Minister. This means, the Menteri Besar is trying to deceive the people through news which is untrue.”

Zahid was speaking to reporters after launching the 45th People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) Day national-level celebration at the Padang Merdeka here today. Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman, federal and state ministers.

He said that last night he and Anifah along with Musa had attended a Sabah Umno event, and he had even posted a picture of himself and Anifah on Twitter.

Prime Minister Najib Razak too Azmin to task for his comments, saying on Facebook and Twitter:
“No minister has informed me that he is quitting. I shall assume Azmin is telling a lie to create a stir unless he can reveal the name.”

Azmin shot back saying Najib denying the claim was not a surprise.

“Of course he will deny it. Wait and see,” the opposition leader said.
