“The Inspector-General of Police (Khalid Abu Bakar) must break his silence.”
The officer who applied for remand and the officer in charge of the police station where Bala was held must be hauled up for an explanation, Gobind said.
“Were there injuries on Bala as claimed? If so, how did such injuries come about and was anything done about it?” Gobind asked in a statement issued today.
He said the officer in charge was responsible for the safety of persons detained in his police station.
He said he would raise the issue in Parliament next month.
“The home ministry must be prepared with answers,” he said, adding that the attorney-general should also take a personal interest in the case and ensure that responsible parties were brought to book.
“They must tell us what happened in this case and what action has been taken to deal with it.
“They must also tell us why, despite all that they say they have done to arrest the problem, deaths in custody still occur in Malaysia.”
Bala was detained by North Klang police on Monday together with two others. His lawyer said the 44-year-old was arrested because he was in the company of men targeted by police.
About 6am on Wednesday, police contacted Bala’s family, telling them to go to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang. When they arrived at the hospital, they were told Bala had died.
His family has asked for a second post-mortem and that all policemen implicated in the case be suspended pending investigations.
Bala leaves behind widow Natthanan Yoochomsook, 38, and their only child Yanika, 14.
