Wisma Putra in a statement said the meeting was aimed at seeking clarification from the Bangladesh government on its decision not to allow the Humanitarian Mission – Food Flotilla for Myanmar to provide humanitarian aid to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
During the meeting, Anifah expressed deep regret over the Bangladesh government’s decision, given the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries.
“The High Commissioner acknowledged my concern and will revert after getting further clarification from the Bangladesh government,” he said in the statement.
Anifah’s statement said Putrajaya had been in close communication with the Bangladesh government, through its high commission in Dhaka as well as the High Commission of Bangladesh in Kuala Lumpur, to enable the food flotilla to provide humanitarian aid to the Rohingya refugees around Teknaf ports.
The food flotilla, organised by Malaysia and flagged off by Prime Minister Najib Razak yesterday, was originally planned to dock at Yangon and proceed to Teknaf, Bangladesh.
Teknaf is the port closest to the 65,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh who had fled persecution in Myanmar since Oct 9 last year.
