Floods: Most victims return home from relief centres

Authorities declare homes in flood affected places safe to return as victims leave relief centres in Sabah, Kelantan, and Terengganu.

PETALING JAYA: Families who had been moved to two relief centres in the district of Kota Marudu, Sabah were able to return home today after flood waters in the area started to recede.

The flood situation has also improved in Kelantan and Terengganu with a largely reduced number of victims in relief centres compared with yesterday evening, authorities say.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department operational division assistant director Khairul Azuwan Ibrahim said that seven relief centres were still open in the Paitan (Beluran) and Pitas districts.

“The Kota Marudu relief centres were closed at 10.03am today. All the victims have been allowed to return home.

“Evacuation is still being carried out in Paitan and Pitas to the relief centres,” Khairul said in a statement sent to FMT.

In the Paitan district a total number of 25 children and 21 women were placed in two relief centres in Kampung Kubambang and Kampung Binsulung.

Over at the Pitas district, 276 children and 156 women were placed in five relief centres in SK Salimpodon Barat, SK Rukom, Sk Pekan 2 Pitas, Kusilan and Sinukap.

Meanwhile, in Kelantan, the number of flood victims still in relief centres is down to 7,006 as of 11am today from the 10,128 recorded as of 5pm yesterday.

A total of 2,495 children, 2,295 women and 244 babies have also been placed in 46 relief centres in Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Pasir Puteh and Kual Krai.

In Terengganu, the flood situation continued to improve with the number of victims in relief centres dropping to 592 today at 11am compared with 1,470 as of 6pm yesterday.

A total of 183 children, 200 women and 13 babies have been placed in 16 relief centres in Setiu, Besut, Kemaman and Hulu Terengganu.

Over in Perak, only one relief centre was opened with eight children and nine women as of 11am today.
